Most “Fix Lexmark Printer” Problems Are Supply Problems in Disguise

I’m the operations manager at a 35-person architecture firm. I’ve been handling print orders, toner orders, and the occasional “can you fix Lexmark printer model 630?” ticket for about seven years. Printable graph paper looks simple, but it’s a great test for a laser printer. A 1/4-inch grid is made of lots of thin lines. If your toner is low, the lines look broken. If the paper is too soft, the line edges bleed and make the grid look blurry. At 300 DPI, a printed page should be crisp for most text; for line work like graph paper, bumping the driver to 600 DPI makes a visible difference.

I’ve printed graph paper for our office’s school supply drive seven years in a row. It still surprises me how one ream of decent paper makes the same file look completely different.

Journal prompts are another example. Teachers and team leaders love prompt cards that are 3×3 inches on a page. They’re small, but they need enough contrast to read at a glance.
