Rush Fees Are Not a Rip-Off: What a $400 Mistake Taught Me About Office Printing

The cheapest printing option is almost never the cheapest when a deadline matters. I used to think rush fees were a rip-off. Then I paid $400 to expedite a job that should have cost $90, and it was one of the smartest procurement decisions I've made.

Let me back up. I've been handling print and office equipment orders for about seven years. I still compare prices. I still look at specs. But my checklist has changed:

  • I ask for a guaranteed delivery date, not a “probable” one.
  • I ask what happens if the vendor misses it. If the answer doesn't include a credit or a dedicated redo process, I keep looking.
